RNC stands for "Really Nice Compressor" and the name is dead on. FMR develops and sells the RNC and it's a mom and pop operation run out of Austin. I was tracking down a power supply for it so I called their tech support line. I ended up talking to the husband CEO and wife VP of Engineering to get the specs straight. This product has a real cult following because it is flexible, quiet, and cheap. Sure, it looks like it was built with parts from Radio Shack...but that's part of the charm. You can click on the Super Nice button for "is this on?" transparency or dial up your ratio to get some pumping and breathing. It retails for $200 (I got mine for $100 + another $10 for the power supply on ebay) and it compares favorably with a $600 dbx. Its overkill for compressing your guitar or bass, but if you're into home recording then this is probably your cup of tea.
